Ithaca, New York

Cost of Living:   Meets the National Average

Ithaca is located in Ithaca-Tompkins County, Central New York State, USA on the south of Cayuga Lake. The name "Ithaca" is inspired by the Greek Island Ithaca. This city is famous for housing the Cornell University which is undoubtedly one of the Ivy League schools in the world. Since this town identity is more or less synonymous with the existence of this excellent educational institution and its owing to its academic atmosphere, it is also known as the "College Town".

This city is also famous for the Namgyal Monastery, which is the North American seat of the 14th Dalai Lama, His Holiness Tenzin Gaytso.

Ithaca has a population of about 61 thousand people with about 1900 people living per square mile. There has been a steady growth in the population over the last ten years (about 11%) indicating that many feel that this place is excellent for relocation.

The race mix in this city has about 89% white people, about 6% Asians while the rest consists of black people, Native Americans and others. You will find that only about 60% of the population follows religious beliefs out of which Protestants are the majority with about 26% followed very closely by the Catholics at 24% and the rest comprising of other Christian faiths, Muslims and Jews.

The economy of this city is very much centered on the famous Ivy League school it is housing and the cost of living here is about 30% more than a average US city. The average income per head (including children) is about US $16 thousand while the income per household averages about US $25 thousand.

The cost of an average home in Ithaca would set you back by about US $225 thousand.   Even so, only about 21% of the population live in rented accommodation while the rest live in self-owned homes.

This would be a great idea for all those who love a thoroughly academic atmosphere and have an alternative way of earning their livelihoods. Though Ithaca is excellent in all ways, employment opportunities are scarce.

The climate is wonderful with a comfort index of 48 out of 100 (higher is better) while the average US index is 44.
